help our neighbors
Service Opportunity on Sat. Oct. 3rd! Right down the mountain off I-24 near Manchester lies Blue Monarch, a 12 month residential program for women (and their children) who are recovering from drug addiction, domestic violence and homelessness. We're going to repair a bus stop for the children and to build a covered firewood shelter near their house, plus split some wood for their winter heating needs. We'll take most of the morning and with any luck finish by lunch--grilled right there--then return. If you're interested in lending a hand to this worthy cause, let Mr. Seavey know right away.

Student Humanitarian Efforts at SAS
One of the foci of Burki Gladstone's sophomore World History class is extreme poverty. My sophomore year that class inspired some students in my grade to take action in the form of fund-raising for anti-malarial bed nets. We hosted two bake sales during Monday tutorials and raised enough money to buy more than 50 bed nets.
This year, we want to do much more.
Plans are in place to host a bake sale every Monday during 10:30 tutorials starting September 21st. We know from experience that people are hungry during that time and food will sell quickly. Any leftovers can always be sold to hungry boarders during study hours. The only limiting factor I can see will be the amount of people willing to bring things to sell. If you are interested or know of anyone interested in making things to sell, please contact me at smiller@sasweb.org.
I think this should be a good way to start a push for more student-based humanitarian efforts. I hope we can keep it consistent throughout the year and that bigger and better things will grow out of it. If anyone has any ideas about this or other endeavors, I'd love to hear about them and get involved!

falling whistles comes to s.a.s.
Sean Carasso of Falling Whistles shared his stories with the community this morning. His stories were hilarious and heartbreaking and INSPIRING. This page is available as a place for all in the community who would like to build on this experience ... discussing, planning projects, sharing information ... anyway you choose. If you need an invitation to get online and post to this site just email your request to jjones@sasweb.org.
